World Water Day, March 22, reflects on how we are valuing this enormous asset and if we are

Try to go a month without eating, you will have discomfort, but if you have water, you will survive. Now try to do the opposite without water, but with food, you will find that in 48 hours, you will almost succumb from lack of water. In other words, we are dependent on water, but we do not even know its meaning in our lives.

We can reflect on a day like today, but usually, we forget the importance of water. After all, we have easy access, which is a wrong attitude because, in addition to being a finite natural good in many ways, we are perhaps on the verge of a worldwide collapse of access to water. Here in Brazil, we have a false impression that this reality is far away.

Firstly, our bodies are composed of water like fruits, vegetables and other animals. When water is impure, it reflects directly on our health and what we consume. Access to quality water is a privilege that ends up neglected. We are not even thankful to the Universe for delivering this rich benefit because we continue ignoring and wasting, disrespecting, contaminating, abusing and losing reuse opportunities for sustainable consumption. An example, this benefit of quality water is lacking for populations living in the Caatinga biome. In the Southeast and Midwest cities of the country, rationing is already a fact. Even with large reservoirs, with underground sheets that seem immense, we don't have that much drinking water, as only 1% of the planet's water is consumable.

We have oceans of saltwater but only one per cent of pure water to drink. To fill this gap, we need to create water purification technologies rather than useless technologies that bring us nothing but idle, meaningless leisure. We live in a time when this indispensable resource is lacking. It is a veiled lack, and practically no one realizes this damage as they do not experience it in the skin. When this occurs in many regions around the planet, we will end up co-responsible for everything that has happened. Water is for producing goods, recycling, for the production of food. Produce, produce, produce. If water is not being productive, preserve it.

There is a saying that water can "be planted" that is true. When we increase forest reserves in certain regions, rainfall rates increase. Consequently, reservoir supplies are more frequent, but this is medium/long-term work. In short, we consume and exterminate reserves, so no value is attributed to this wealth. We literally consume, consume and consume unconsciously, madly like someone who tears money, but in this case, we exterminate lives the opportunity to live.

In contemplating our actions take a look at this magnificent asset and the limitation of this sacred and divine resource, knowing that it produces almost everything. In the water we are living, in its absence, we are fragile beings almost lifeless. For the lack of water is death itself.

Whenever we look at a glass of mineral water, filtered and pure, consumed and digested by our bodies, be mindful of how much we are supplying our bodies with life. Without this, we are nothing but criminals against nature that provides for us since we only return abuse and aggression.

Save every drop of water. May we always have access to the noblest and benign resource that nature offers us and makes up each one of us.
